Re: Considering a sonex but still would like info on some sp

Avionics choices will be one choice of many in terms of the final empty weight of your airplane, and as Lou pointed out, in todays world of modern avionics and integrated EFIS systems, the weight in avionics really doesn't need to be all that much and still have a fully functional avionics suite. Th...

Re: pre-heat to hot?

I agree with Graeme; 500 degrees will be hot enough to soften or possibly melt the fiberglass or at the very least, burn up the paint on the cowling. That's pretty darn hot and I personally wouldn't use that much heat. I tend to favor warm air and longer durations of preheat. Remember, you just want...

Re: Aerovee Overhaul Guide?

I don't think there really is any specific tear down or maintenance instructions other than the build manual as Bryan pointed out. What's the story on the engine? Has it been sitting for a while and you want to check it over? As the owner you will basically be able to do anything you want in terms o...

Re: Dreamer

Welcome to the group! We're glad to have you here and hope we can answer your questions as you think of them. One of the reasons I was so interested in the Sonex line of airplanes was the value of the design. 10 years ago when I first flew my Waiex, I had it flying for less than $30,000 American dol...

Re: airventure 2021

I read the update this week that included: - Masks will be recommended/required if social distancing can't be accomplished - Vaccine's won't be required - International visitation will depend on the requirements at that time - Monday night concert (and other events with high foot traffic) won't happ...

Re: accident sonex N610DJ

I had not heard of this one. Report says he lost his engine, couldn’t get it restarted, and stall/spin on a base to final turn. Maybe he was just trying to make it to the runway? If so this is at least the second recent accident where someone experienced engine issues and landed short while trying t...

Re: What is my plane worth?

Just a thought Ron, and I’m sure you’ve already considered this... Adding ADS-B Out to the RV could be as easy as installing a uAvionix Echo UAT or one of the wingtip/tail beacon systems (if the airplane has exterior lights). Those would potentially work with the current transponder, not add anythin...

Re: What is my plane worth?

Hello Ron, I wish I could give you an exact value but selling a Waiex is tricky right now given a soft market and increasing issues with insurance. Take my two cents for what it’s worth (not that much) but your Waiex, as it sits now, is probably worth $24,000-29,000 if you are in a hurry to sell it....

Re: Oil pressure spikes and variances.

The pressure relief valve is a pretty basic setup but if the plunger is sticking at all that could cause your issue. Have you added oil to the engine lately? I’ve read reports that adding too much oil to the engine can also cause similar situations. These engines seem happiest when they are kept may...

Re: Insurance vs FAA requirements-

Welcome to the forums and the Sonex family! You have a wonderful story. It’s really amazing how emotionally attached we can get to airplanes, and your story with the Tri Pacer is a wonderful example. I grew up in the back of a Cessna Cardinal that my dad and grandfather flew and I wish I had the abi...
