Re: Turbo - Static MAP vs. in-flight MAP?

One more item to consider Noel; are you sure your manifold pressure gauge is calibrated properly? Did you calibrate it per the MGL manual? If you’re getting good engine rpms (which it sure seems like you are) then there’s a good case here you’re getting the manifold pressure you need. If you’re only...

Re: Re:Corvair Engines - Justification Series- Structure His

• Accident analyses indicate that power plant failures and loss of control in flight are the most common E-AB aircraft accident occurrences by a large margin and that accident occurrences are similar for both new and used aircraft. This is the same for both E-AB aircraft in general, as well as the ...

Re: AirVenture 2018

I always plan on making it, weather and family responsibilities permitting! I've flown the Waiex up 5 of the last 6 years, and I'm hoping to fly it up again this year as well! In general, when flying up I always like trying to arrive either the Saturday or early Sunday morning before the show just t...

Re: Siezed low-time neglected turbocharger

I would think that hitting a pothole at a decent speed would impart more forces on the turbo bearings than anything you could do in flight. You must drive through Ohio in the winter and spring time! Talk about potholes...most of the roads up here now look like we were bombed by B-52's all winter lo...

Re: Great plains ?

I have yet to hear of anyone purchasing the turbo retrofit kit from Sonex and installing it on another brand of VW-based engine, but logic would say you could do it. The heads should be similar in size, as well as the basic core of the engine; you may have to perform some of your own engineering to ...

Re: Anybody know?

Keith probably has better info than I do, but a rough estimate can be found by looking at the builders database on the factory website. There numbers are very rough estimates... Sonex - 1750 sets of plans sold total (kits and plans) Waiex - 220 kits sold Onex - 200 kits sold Xenos - 50 kits sold Sub...

Re: Jabaru vs Corvair

Thanks Keith. I’m curious, would that include the SPA billet crankshaft? I think those are close to $3,000 alone so I wasn’t sure. 100 hp on 7-8K would be nice!

Re: Top Oil Cooler Conversion

Good question Bryan. Again, I noticed little change overall. If I get a chance here soon, I’ll try to perform a quick test and do a test flight with the cover plate installed and then again with the plate removed just to see what, if any, differences there are. Hopefully I can get out to the airport...

Re: Jabaru vs Corvair

Interesting topic Mike and thanks for bringing it up. I think there are a lot of people looking for maximum performance out of their Sonexes, so this is an excellent time to bring up this subject. Personally, in the end this will be a decision based on personal preference. I’ve flown Sonexes with th...
