Re: Tailbeacon on a Waiex

My sheetmetal piece is a bust. The mounting tabs are interfering with the skybeacon. Not enough room. Anybody doing something similar, I recommend making it bigger. What I am going to do to recover is make a laminate of glass, 0.025" aluminum, glass, and bond it into the cone. Stay tuned.

Re: Flush Avex

To the best of my knowledge, Avex aluminum rivets have never been approved for building a Sonex product. For those who do not wish to use protruding head rivets, others have used the stainless steel flush rivets as sold by Sonex to create a smooth surface more easily polished. Wish I had done this ...

Re: any fueling tricks and advice?

I had a bad spill on my Sonex, and was able to avoid the problem with a very generous soaking with water. Thank goodness there was a hose close by. No cracks or discoloration. This was my second windshield, thanks to a previous fuel spill that I didn't wash down immediately. The line kid screwed up...

Re: Weight & Balance

I stand to be corrected - Datum point is just the point at/from which all measurements are taken/rferede back to. You do not have to use the Sonex recommended tip of spinner (especially if not using the Sonex spinner). In fact most homebuilts use the leading edge of the wing, in recognitions that t...

Re: Weight & Balance

Thank you very much Chris. Are the data you posted referred to the Sonex-B? Mario Welcome Mario! If you check out Chris's blog or posts here, you will see he has an A model. The B will have the same datums. Check out this graphic from Sonex: https://www.sonexaircraft.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/...

Re: Sonex-A purchase - What to look for

Anyone not too far from a course between KTHV and KGOO who would like to meet up first week in June, let me know! KTHV to C77.png It's about 600 nm to C77, so could be reached in 1-2 days depending upon your endurance. At least 6 hours of flight time. Not too far off the great circle route to KGOO....

That seems plausible!

Re: Tailbeacon on a Waiex

Note this lock ring is on backwards. I'm just using it for stiffness. This part was too loose to use. Screenshot_20240522-175719~2.png The tabs are bent up nicely and I can see them with the flashlight trick. After it is riveted on I'll do a couple more plies, to both close up the end and hide the f...

Re: Flush Avex

I know Rick (racaldwell) flush riveted his Xenos. The main downside i would see is that I had a percentage of mandrels pop off proud of the surface and that required extra work. So extra work is the main reason not to do it, but of course that's a good reason to buy a Cessna rather than build. Go fo...
