Quality Assurance

When I used to work at Sikorsky, Q/A was an important part of the job. Inspectors independently go over the work of others to ensure it is up to standard. The first step in quality, however, is to be critical of your own work. Quality is built in, not inspected in. The other day my 12 year old was u...

Re: Combination switch/fuses

We had a similar switch on our tow reels at Harris Hill where I used to tow gliders. You would flip the switch on in the pattern once you were below 100 mph and were supposed to turn it off when it was retracted. Easy to miss, when the motor stalls for a bit the switch trips and you can hear it at l...

Re: Drilling inside elevator rib to horn

I have one like this, but clunkier. One of my favorite tools.

Re: Cotton Waiex 191 - N191YX

We riveted together the right hand tail skeleton. I used AN426 4-4's as I had a regular #30 dimple die I was willing to grind down. These are Adam's first bucked rivets.

Flush rivets for tail ribs at the root end

Hi all,
I dimpled my aft spar channels, but when I went to dimple the mating holes in the aft part of the ribs they were too close to the radius. Looks like I will have to grind one of my dimple dies.

Re: Tinnermans eating screws

Mike,
I have never seen machine screws used with tinnermans. The 140 used them extensively but always with sheet metal screws.
