Re: General Info wanted about temps

Honestly, I've never found sealing the heck out of the baffles to change anything. I think sealing every little crack and opening is over rated in the Sonex cowl. That said, I did put a piece of heat resistant tape over the hole in the engine case that you point to. Your engine is going to run hot a...

Re: Corrosion Protection

Been a member here for a while, mostly reading threads. Going to look at a Onex project next week for sale several hundred miles from the Ocean. I'm in the Charlotte NC area over 200 miles from the Ocean. Noticed the Onex project photos did not have anything applied for corrosion. After reading thr...

Re: General Info wanted about temps

I had the exact same problems in the beginning: 1. Even though your EGTs are not high, I would still try richening the mixture a bit. That was my biggest problem; I waited too long before changing needles (but try richening in 1/8 turn increments, first). I was burning 2.5 to 3 gph, which is WAY too...

Re: TAKE OFF FLAP SETTING

I started flying my AeroVee Sonex with 1 notch of flaps for takeoff, but after a year of flying and trying different things, I found the ONLY time I got better takeoffs with flaps, was from grass or rough strips. Unless I'm flying off one of those surfaces I use no flaps. With one person on board I'...

Re: Hydraulic brakes mounting plate

However, now that I have everything up on gear with the fuse mostly done I can see that the wheel pant is no where near level wrt. the longeron. It is quite a bit too nose down. Is it possible that the prepunched hole in that metal plate is not in the correct location? I'm considering removing the ...

Re: On a quest for the elusive "Dry AeroVee"

To stop the push rod tubes from leaking I use the EMPI white silicone pushrod seals. No leaks at all using these seals on the pushrod tubes. SILICONE PUSHROD TUBE SEALS, dune buggy vw baja bug https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0046VRW8C/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I've used 3 se...

Re: On a quest for the elusive "Dry AeroVee"

I tried, unsuccessfully, to make a pair of pliers that could expand a standard pushrod tube after it was installed. There are pushrod tubes that are spring loaded also. Bill Larson used those. I'm not sure how well they worked. The threaded alum. tubes are infinitely adjustable. The spring loaded o...

Re: Cowl mod

Highest reading 1425 egt that is on the ground This is just my opinion but that seems pretty lean. I’m normally happy with a smooth running engine at full power (on climb for example) and when I see maximum EGT readings around 1200-1300. Any higher than that and my CHTs will go pretty high. Conside...

Re: On a quest for the elusive "Dry AeroVee"

... as well as the 6 nuts holding the sump plate in place. I’ve tried different ways to seal those areas up but nothing has made much difference. I put a dab of high temp form-a-gasket on each copper washer before I put them over the studs. That also helps to keep the washers in place as I put the ...
